Balayage is the French word for “to sweep” which is exactly how balayage is done. This is a technique that has been around for quite a long time but with the internet, has circulated as one of the most used word to describe client’s desired hair. So how does this relate to your hair?
What is balayage really?
Balayage is an overall look meant to mimic the sun’s natural lightening of hair. Take a look at very light haired children, you’ll see that the sun has naturally lightened the hair around their faces and on the ends where the hair is the finest. There is usually depth around the crown area so highlights are cascading in various areas but you no harsh lines are noticeable. The key is that there’s not an extreme amount of contrast. So what’s the difference between sun-kissed and high contrast balayage?
Sun-Kissed Hair
If you are looking for a more natural, sun-kissed look, and dimension, the process can be simple. One to three shades lighter than your natural will usually only take one session and the grow out process is completely painless. Several months to half a year before another session may be required. I would highly recommend this service for extremely low-maintenance individuals who are looking for a change without the long-term commitment.
High-Contrast Balayage
If you desire a shade of highlights that is far from your natural hair color, this would be considered high contrast. In this case it’s important to remember that it will not be as naturally sun-kissed. Instead, you’re looking at a color correction process where other techniques besides balayage may be used. The overall look will still mimic a balayaged look but the actually technique will be done differently. This process can take up to several sessions to maintain healthy hair and the maintenance can be high.
Who is Balayage for?
Pretty much anyone would be a good candidate for balayage. As stated before, the mainteance is low for those who stay closer to their natural and higher for those who choose to go significantly lighter than their natural.
Why Does It Cost More?
Balayage is a niche. Not every stylist or salon offers it. I was self-taught and watched videos when I first started but throughout the years I have watched many educators teach their own take on it. The resources used to learn and improve this technique helps me offer the latest and greatest to all my clients. In comparison to traditional highlighting with foils, balayage allows the client to go far longer without retouches ultimately requiring less visits to the salon.
