My first week open as Jaelei Beauty, I had a client come in who wanted a light blonde balayage ombre. I asked her about her hair history but realized later that I did not push further. It was not until heat started smoking out of her foils that I really asked more in depth questions. In this case, I assumed she only colored her hair that one time last year. Little did I know, she had her hair lightening three-four times! After lightening over and over, she had it all covered up TWICE.

So here I am, thinking it’s all good, I could probably get her light enough. I was excited to try out some new products and techniques but before I even finished her last section, I started feeling the heat rise. We immediately washed out the back of her hair and it was then that I could see what she had going on. Bleach doesn’t lie. Therefore, this is a reminder and a lesson I will never forget. I hope that I do more to uncover the hair of my clients and I also need to remind myself, there are some instances where you have to ask more questions!

With this post, I hope to educate my clients enough to know when it might not be the best choice. There is a reason hairstylists suggests products they work with on a daily basis. For me personally, I choose to use and carry hair care that I know I can stand behind and that works to keep your hair in the best shape.

Proceed With Caution

These things can majorly deter me from lightening your hair as they cause a reaction that can be detrimental. Some will still allow us to go ahead of the service as long as we do a treatment that can strip minerals and product buildup. There are some factors that can be dangerous to your hair if not disclosed. The following are things I need to know before any color service in order to best predict your results:

Chlorine

Medication

Well water

Product build up

Henna

Box Color

Lice Treatments

Hot Tubs

Straightening or Smoothing Treatments

Sun In

Henna

Things like henna would stop me from performing any service at all. Henna is often times natural but mixed with professional products can cause the hair to react. So if you have henna, please do not use any other kind of chemical service on your hair until you have grown it out.

Product Build Up

If your hair has not been clarified in a while and you are using drug store brand products, you may have a good amount of wax buildup. Let’s do a clarifying treatment before we do any coloring.

Successful Hair Color Starts and Ends at Home

I would love to work with everyone that comes in and I hope to. I just want to make sure potential clients know that the consultation is the most important part of the process. Your hair history and your at-home hair care is just as vital.

Things you can do to improve the health of your hair include:

Adding Olaplex to all of your hair color services.

Taking home professional products including leave-in products.

Hair treatments including masks regularly.

Getting haircuts every 6-8 weeks.

Not washing your hair everyday.

Hopefully this helps to get your ready for hair color and how to take care of your hair color after the process. Just remember, don’t get expensive hair services and use cheap products to care for it, it will wash right down the sink. And this is how we can keep your hair looking good all year round!

Love,

Jae
